Volcano’s lava dome to expand steadily

The hot rock continued to ooze through the volcano. The lava caused regular ash plumes and steam seen for a miles around Mount St. Helens volcano. “Red incandescence from the 1,200-degree lava can reflect off clouds and steam, creating a rosy glow in the sky at night”, Tina Neal, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientist, said.

Geologists warn that although the volcano remains at Level 2 eruption alert, Mount St. Helens could erupt as magma continues to build up beneath the lava dome created after the outbreak in 1980. That ejection killed 57 people, leveled miles of forests and caused massive mudflows and landslides.
