Fourteen of Singapore's top building and construction companies have formed a consortium to pursue a whole range of opportunities in the Middle East. The consortium is one of the largest formed under IE Singapore's iPartners Programme and the first to specifically target projects in the Middle East. It is the direct result of the business mission to Qatar and Kuwait, led by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong recently.
The group is known as the Singapore Building and Infrastructure Consortium, or SBIC, and includes big names like DP Architects, SembCorp Engineers and Constructors and Meinhardt Singapore. It brings together leading architects, cost engineers, specialist consultants, engineers, builders and suppliers in Singapore.
Collectively, the consortium members represent the complete value chain for the building and construction sector - from masterplanning, engineering, consultancy, construction to procurement. This enables the SBIC to present an integrated team capable of delivering complete solutions which no single entity would be able to offer.
The group is expected to gain from the experience and connections of members who have secured projects in the Middle East. Flagship projects by consortium members in the Middle East include the Dubai Mall project by DP Architects, and the Palm Jumeriah Island project by SembCorp Engineers and Constructors. The Middle East is proving to be a emerging market which lucrative projects worth several billion dollars.
Just last week, a unit of Temasek Holdings, Surbana, clinched contracts worth US $2.5 billion to provide design consultancy services for three projects in Abu Dhabi. Also part of the consortium are: Rider Hunt Levett & Bailey, Connell Wagner, Singco, Tiong Seng Contractors and FacadeMaster. The rest of the members are: Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner, Lightweight Concrete Holdings, Meinhardt Singapore, Meinhardt Facade and Arup Singapore.
